All drivers should continue to follow hands-free guidelines, using voice-activated technology and keeping devices out of hand while driving. Cell phone calls should be made prior to or at the completion of a trip. If a call must be made during a trip, drivers must pull into a safe location and stop before making the call. If the driver receives an incoming call while driving, they must allow the call to go to voicemail and return the call when stopped in a safe location. Eating while driving is prohibited.
Beginning July 1, the hands-free law will go into effect in the state of Iowa. Here’s what you need to know:
Drivers will have a warning period of 6 months until December 31, 2025, to adjust to the new regulations. Law enforcement in Iowa will be issuing written warnings to drivers who violate the law. After the warning is up, drivers who violate Iowa’s hands-free driving law will receive a $100 fine, which is an increase from the previous $45 fine for texting while driving.
When it comes to increased penalties for violations resulting in injury, the fine increases to $500, and drivers’ risk having their driver’s license suspended. If it leads to a fatality, the fine is $1,000, and license suspension may be even more likely.
Electronic devices such as cell phones, tablets, laptops, PDAs, and gaming devices apply when it comes to the new hands-free law.
