Fake cobwebs and plastic skeletons are fun. Real damage hiding in your gutters is not.
As fall wraps up and temperatures drop, gutters quietly become one of the most overlooked parts of your home. Here are five signs that something frightening may be lurking up there.
1. Plants growing out of your gutters
If you see weeds, moss, or even small saplings sprouting along the roof line, debris has been sitting there long enough to turn into soil, which means water isn’t draining the way it should.
2. Water spilling over the edges
During a rainstorm, gutters should carry water away through the downspouts. If water is pouring over the sides, your gutter system is clogged, pitched incorrectly, or undersized for your roof.
3. Sagging, pulling away, or “ghost” streaks
Gutters that droop or separate from the fascia bear more weight than they were built to handle. Vertical streaks on siding are another clue that water is overflowing where it shouldn’t.
4. Peeling paint, rotted fascia, or stained siding
Water that isn’t going where it should is going somewhere else, usually into the wood and materials behind the gutter.
5. Pooling water or erosion near your foundation
This is the real horror story. Water collecting around your foundation can lead to cracks, basement leaks, and expensive repairs.
6. Why this matters before winter
When leftover leaves and standing water freeze, the added weight can pull gutters off the house, and ice buildup can back water up under your shingles. A small fix now can prevent a much bigger bill in spring.
What a professional gutter check covers
- Inspecting for clogs, leaks, and loose or damaged sections
- Checking pitch so water actually flows toward the downspouts
- Making sure downspouts discharge far enough from your foundation
- Discussing repair, replacement, or guard options if your system is past its prime
